ACIM Lesson 155
I will step back and let Him lead the way.
Lesson 155 — I Will Step Back and Let Him Lead the Way
There is a profound relief hidden within this lesson. It asks nothing of us except what the ego fears most: to stop trying so hard.
For much of my life, I believed I needed to become someone. I thought I needed to achieve, accomplish, prove, improve, and somehow earn my place in the world. Beneath all that striving was a quiet belief that who I was right now was not enough.
This lesson gently challenges that belief.
To step back is not to become passive or disengaged. It is not a call to withdraw from life. It is an invitation to stop allowing fear to lead. It is a willingness to loosen our grip on the plans, identities, and expectations we have constructed and trust that a deeper wisdom is already present.
The Course teaches that there is another way of living in the world. From the outside, nothing may appear different. We continue our work, care for our families, and meet the responsibilities of daily life. Yet inwardly, everything changes. We are no longer trying to force life to unfold according to our personal agenda. We become listeners rather than controllers. We become available rather than driven.
What I love most about this lesson is its reminder that truth is already leading the way. We do not have to create the path. We do not have to know where it leads. We are simply asked to trust the One who does.
Looking back, many of the most important moments in my life arrived when I stopped pushing and became willing to receive. The guidance was there. The opportunities were there. The next step was there. What changed was my willingness to step aside and allow something wiser than my fears to guide me.
There is great freedom in admitting that we do not know. There is great peace in trusting that Love does.
Today, whenever I feel myself tightening around an outcome, trying to force an answer, or believing it is all up to me, I return to this simple prayer:
I will step back and let Him lead the way.
And in that moment, I remember that I am not walking alone.
A Listening Practice
If it feels natural, you might let this idea continue beyond the words.
Two musical reflections accompany this lesson—
each offering a different way of entering the same truth.
A grounded chant, steady and spacious,
like a quiet return within.
A devotional song,
carrying the feeling of being held in what has never changed.
You might listen to one… or both…
not to understand,
but to let the truth be felt.
There is nothing to achieve here.
Only a willingness to rest…
and allow the remembrance to deepen.
