ACIM Lesson 197
It can be but my gratitude I earn.
Today's lesson exposed a place in my heart I know well.
I want to believe I give freely. I want to think my kindness asks for nothing in return. But if I'm honest, there are moments when disappointment quietly follows generosity. I notice when my effort isn't acknowledged, when my love isn't received the way I hoped, when my forgiveness seems unnoticed.
The Course gently asks me an uncomfortable question: Was it truly a gift if I expected something back?
That doesn't mean appreciation isn't beautiful. It is. But today's lesson reminds me that the value of love cannot depend on another person's response. If it does, I've unknowingly placed my peace in someone else's hands.
The miracle comes when I realize God has already received every loving thought, every act of kindness, every moment of forgiveness. Nothing offered in love is ever wasted. Even when it appears unnoticed, love has already accomplished what it came to do—beginning within me.
That changes everything.
Instead of asking whether others recognized my gift, I can simply ask whether I gave it with an open heart.
The gratitude I seek isn't waiting in another person's approval. It quietly appears the moment I remember who I really am. Love is its own reward because love is its own fulfillment.
Today's lesson invites me to loosen my grip on outcomes and trust that every genuine expression of love has already been received where it matters most.
Perhaps the greatest gift I can give is one I never try to take back.
A Listening Practice
If it feels natural, you might let this idea continue beyond the words.
Two musical reflections accompany this lesson—
each offering a different way of entering the same truth.
A grounded chant, steady and spacious,
like a quiet return within.
A devotional song,
carrying the feeling of being held in what has never changed.
You might listen to one… or both…
not to understand,
but to let the truth be felt.
There is nothing to achieve here.
Only a willingness to rest…
and allow the remembrance to deepen.
