ACIM Lesson 153

In my defenselessness my safety lies.

Most of us spend a great deal of energy protecting ourselves.

We defend our opinions. We defend our identities. We defend old wounds, old stories, and carefully constructed versions of who we believe we must be.

The Course gently asks a startling question: What if the very defenses we rely upon are the source of our fear?

Defensiveness assumes there is something vulnerable that must be protected. It assumes attack is real and that our safety depends on vigilance. Yet every defense keeps our attention fixed on danger, reinforcing the belief that we are separate, fragile, and alone.

Today’s lesson invites a different possibility.

Beneath all the striving, explaining, proving, and protecting is a deeper Self that cannot be harmed. The Christ within us does not need to defend itself because it was created by God and remains exactly as God created it.

Defenselessness is not passivity. It is trust.

It is entering each moment without armor. It is meeting life with an open heart instead of a guarded one. It is remembering that peace does not come from controlling the world but from releasing the belief that we are threatened by it.

As we lay down our defenses, even briefly, we discover something unexpected:

The safety we sought through protection was already present beneath the fear.

In our defenselessness, our safety lies.

A Listening Practice

If it feels natural, you might let this idea continue beyond the words.

Two musical reflections accompany this lesson—
each offering a different way of entering the same truth.

A grounded chant, steady and spacious,
like a quiet return within.

A devotional song,
carrying the feeling of being held in what has never changed.

You might listen to one… or both…
not to understand,
but to let the truth be felt.

There is nothing to achieve here.
Only a willingness to rest…
and allow the remembrance to deepen.
