ACIM Lesson 199

I am not a body. I am free.

Perhaps no lesson in A Course in Miracles is more misunderstood than this one.

When Jesus says, "I am not a body," He is not asking us to reject our bodies or treat them as unimportant. He is inviting us to release the mistaken belief that our body is who we are.

The body changes. It grows stronger and weaker. It experiences pleasure and pain. It is born, and one day it dies. If this is our identity, fear becomes unavoidable.

But the Course gently points us beyond appearances.

Our true Self is not confined by time, space, illness, age, or circumstance. We are the awareness that witnesses the body's experience without being limited by it. We are God's beloved Son, forever safe in Love.

Seen this way, the body becomes something beautiful—not our prison, but our instrument.

Hands become a way to comfort.

Eyes become a way to see Christ in another.

A voice becomes a way to offer forgiveness.

Feet become a way to carry kindness into the world.

The body is no longer asked to prove our worth or secure our happiness. It simply serves the purpose of love.

Today's lesson is ultimately about freedom—not freedom from the body, but freedom from believing the body defines us.

Each time we remember, "I am not a body. I am free," we loosen fear's grip and allow the Holy Spirit to use this temporary form for eternal purposes.

Our body becomes not our identity, but love's willing servant.

A Listening Practice

If it feels natural, you might let this idea continue beyond the words.

Two musical reflections accompany this lesson—
each offering a different way of entering the same truth.

A grounded chant, steady and spacious,
like a quiet return within.

A devotional song,
carrying the feeling of being held in what has never changed.

You might listen to one… or both…
not to understand,
but to let the truth be felt.

There is nothing to achieve here.
Only a willingness to rest…
and allow the remembrance to deepen.
