ACIM Lesson 221

Peace to my mind. Let all my thoughts be still.

There is something different about this lesson.

We are no longer being given many words to study or ideas to work through. We are being asked to come quietly.

That sounds simple. But a mind accustomed to searching, solving, planning, remembering, and trying to understand does not always know how to become still.

So today I am not asked to make myself peaceful.

I am asked to come.

To bring the mind exactly as it is and become willing, even for a little while, to stop directing everything.

The prayer says, in essence: I do not know the way to You. I do not know what I need. I do not know what I should ask for. So I will be quiet and listen.

There is tremendous humility in that.

And perhaps tremendous relief.

The ego is always certain that something needs to happen before peace can come. Something must change. Something must be resolved. I must understand more, heal more, become better, get somewhere else.

But this lesson offers another possibility.

What if peace does not require me to get anywhere?

What if my part is simply to stop for a moment and allow the noise to settle?

Then comes one of the tenderest moments in the lesson: the reminder that I am not waiting alone. Jesus does not stand somewhere ahead of me, calling me toward a place he has already reached. He waits with me. Our minds are joined.

That changes the feeling of the silence.

It is not empty.

It is shared.

And God does not need to arrive, because God is already here.

Today I can let the prayer be very simple:

I have come.

I am willing to be still.

I am willing to listen.

And for these few quiet moments, I do not need to know anything more.

A Listening Practice

Before entering the silence, you may wish to listen to today’s Prayer Song.

Rather than trying to understand the lesson, simply let the words and music carry the prayer for a while. Listen as though you are joining the prayer yourself—speaking when the words are yours, receiving when they are spoken to you, and allowing the spaces between them to remain open.

There is nothing you need to accomplish here.

When the music ends, let it end.

Remain in the quiet. Rest with the lesson. Listen.
