ACIM Lesson 185
I want the peace of God.
One of the great surprises of the spiritual journey is discovering that what we have been chasing all along was never the thing itself. We pursue security, success, relationships, healing, recognition, or certainty, believing they will finally bring us peace. Yet once one desire is fulfilled, another quickly takes its place.
Lesson 185 gently uncovers the deeper longing beneath every dream. We don't truly want the forms we seek. We want the peace we imagine they will provide.
Jesus isn't asking us to give up life. He's asking us to stop bargaining with it. Every compromise that says, "I'll be at peace when..." keeps peace just beyond our reach.
The peace of God is different. It isn't something the world gives, nor something the world can take away. It is already present beneath every fear, every ambition, every disappointment. As we become willing to value that peace above our cherished stories and imagined solutions, we begin to remember what has never left us.
Today's practice is beautifully simple: whenever another desire captures your attention, gently ask yourself, "Is this what I would have in place of Heaven and the peace of God?" Not as a judgment, but as an invitation to remember what your heart has truly wanted all along.
A Listening Practice
If it feels natural, you might let this idea continue beyond the words.
Two musical reflections accompany this lesson—
each offering a different way of entering the same truth.
A grounded chant, steady and spacious,
like a quiet return within.
A devotional song,
carrying the feeling of being held in what has never changed.
You might listen to one… or both…
not to understand,
but to let the truth be felt.
There is nothing to achieve here.
Only a willingness to rest…
and allow the remembrance to deepen.
